Babies Go to Congress4.13.09 – Despite efforts by abortion-on-demand activists to compel students to protest nonprofit pregnancy centers affiliated with Heartbeat International, pregnancy centers continue to provide the hope, information, and resources women need when confronted with an untimely pregnancy. According to their website, The Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF) opposes parental consent and notification laws, 24-hour waiting periods, informed consent laws, and bans prohibiting taxpayer funding for abortion. FMF “started the Campus Program to inform young feminists about the very real threats to abortion access, women’s rights, affirmative action, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights posed by right-wing extremists.” In a recent email, FMF’s national campus coordinator wrote that pregnancy centers “often use misinformation to intimidate women out of considering abortion as an option.” “Many medical researchers have come to different conclusions regarding the effects of abortion and that’s why it is important to give each woman faced with an unexpected pregnancy accurate information about all of her options,” said Heartbeat President Peggy Hartshorn, Ph.D. “Heartbeat’s network of care is the positive alternative to the abortion industry’s billion dollar business of selling the abortion choice.” Heartbeat affiliated pregnancy centers, operating on charitable donations from community members, provide all the facts on abortion – from abortion procedure details, risks, and medical complications to fetal development and post abortion syndrome. These are the crucial facts each woman needs to make an informed decision about an unexpected baby; these are the life-saving facts that abortion clinics often leave out. Unfortunately, about 80% of women who aborted a pregnancy report that they did not receive the information necessary to make an informed decision. If you ask the women served by Heartbeat affiliates, they will be the first to tell you that pregnancy centers are good for America. In fact, some moms even took their babies and this message to Capitol Hill earlier this year as part of our Babies Go to Congress™ event and you can read their testimonies here. A recent report by Dr. Martha Shuping and Chris Cacek, “Big Girls Do Cry: The Hidden Truth of Abortion,” Feb, 2009, reveals the pain caused by abortion. In addition to providing a variety of confidential services offered at no charge to the client, more than 60% of pregnancy centers provide abortion recovery programs. Sadly, many women who participate in our abortion recovery programs can testify to the painful physical and emotional effects of aborting a baby. Some of Heartbeat pregnancy center directors who give of their time and talents to serve their communities, have experienced the trauma of abortion, found healing, and are now dedicated to helping women build strong families. Heartbeat affiliates, as part of the affiliation process, sign onto “Our Commitment of Care” which ensures that every client is treated with respect and compassion. Pregnancy center staff and volunteers are compassionate and caring towards every woman who comes into a pregnancy center for help and use all educational materials in the context of their relationship with each woman.
